Year 1, Term 4, Week 1: Ideas for Junior Group

Week 1: Jesus is coming - The Prophet's foretold it!

Lesson Objective:

It was always God's plan to send King Jesus to rescue us, God's prophets tell us so!

Bible Passage:

Isaiah 1:1-4, 7:1-14, Micah 5:1-5 (Prophecy about Jesus)

Memory Verse:

Isaiah 7:14 - A Virgin is pregnant. She will have a son and will name him Immanuel.

Story Idea: Tell it with Visuals

You will need:

- Megaphone & sword (from prop cupboard)

- 2 x Biblical Costumes

- Cardboard signs to hang around kids necks - one saying 'ISAIAH' and the other 'MICAH

- Kings crown

Introduce:

- Who has a pet dog or cat? Do your pets know that they belong to you? Do they love and trust you? (Yes!)

- Animals know who their owners are, but the Bible tells us that God's people often forget who they belong to!

- A long time ago, God's people had forgotten Him -they were doing the wrong thing and God had a really important message for them!

- God used people called PROPHETS in the Bible to pass on His messages

- Two important prophets were ISAIAH and MICAH (get two volounteers up the front and dress them in Biblical clothes, putting the ISAIAH and MICAH signs around their necks)

Tell it:

- ISAIAH (point to Isaiah) told God's people that God was very upset with them!

- He said that even animals know who their owner is, but God's people had forgotten who they belonged to!

- God's people had turned away from Him and done their own thing - that's called sin - and it makes God VERY upset!

- Instead of following God, the people were fighting each other (show sword)!

- Lots of people felt afraid because of all the fighting

- THIS WAS TERRIBLE NEWS

- Everything seemed HOPELESS... Lots of people were fighting, lots of people were scared and God was upset with them all!

BUT - ISAIAH and MICAH had GOOD NEWS from God as well!

- ISAIAH said that a special lady was going to have a SPECIAL BABY

- MICAH said that the special baby would be born in Bethlehem and would be a NEW KING (put on crown)

- The new king was going to bring peace to the WHOLE WORLD

- Maybe the people thought that the new king would stop all of the fighting...

- But the new king was going to do something MUCH MUCH better!

- The new king - KING JESUS - would fix the problem of sin so that God would no longer be upset with all the people!

- That is how the new King would bring peace to everyone!

Quiz Questions:

2. What is sin? Doing the opposite of what God wants

3.. What had the people forgotten? Who they belonged to

4. Why was God upset with the people? They had turned away from Him

5. Who was God going to send? A new King - Jesus

6. What problem was Jesus going to fix? Sin

7. Because Jesus fixed sin, we can be friends with God again... How does that make you feel? Happy, joyful, thankful etc.

Game Idea: Pin the Crown on Jesus!

Before the lesson:

- Download and print the Jesus and crown templates (one crown per child)

- Attach blue tack to the back of all of the crowns and blue-tack the Jesus face to the wall

- Gather blindfolds

Play:

- Kids should line up

- Each child has a turn being blind-folded, spun around and attempting to stick the crown on Jesus head

- The closest to the correct spot wins!

Remind the kids that Jesus is the promised King that Isaiah and Micah were talking about!

Craft Idea: Crown Christmas Decoration
