Year 1, Term 3, Week 2: Ideas for Senior Group

Week 2: God Loves His People - And He is Powerful!

Lesson Objective:

God is powerful - he showed Moses that he was powerful enough to rescue His people from Egypt!

Bible Passage:

Exodus 4:1-11 (Moses Miracles)

Memory Verse:

Exodus 4:12- "Now Go! When you speak, I will be with you and give you the words to say."

Story Idea: Team Trust Challenge & Read It!

Before the lesson:

- Create an obstacle course (chairs to go over/under, obstacles to weave around, play tunnel to crawl through etc.)

To introduce:

- Ask the kids if they can remember last weeks lesson, and prompt them to remember that God asked Moses to go and rescue His people!

- Have the kids form a snake (holding hands)

- The whole team must complete the obstacle course without breaking the snake chain - each team member must be touching the next in line the whole time!

- To make it harder, try blindfolding everybody but the leader and completing the challenge again!

- For an EXTRA HARD challenge, blindfold the kids, then move some obstacles so they are disorientated!

Discuss:

- Do you need the help of your team mates to make the challenge work? (Yes)

- If you are blindfolded, how do you know you can trust your team members to help you through? (You know them well, you know they can do obstacle courses and have seen them complete the course before)

Have the kids read Exodus 4:1-12, taking turns to read a verse or two each

Quiz Questions:

1. What was Moses worried might happen when he told everyone that God had spoken to him? Nobody would listen

2. What is a miracle? Something amazing that God does that we can't explain

3. What miracles did God do in the story? Turned the stick into the snake, turned his hand white, turned water into blood

4. What do you think these miracles tell us about God? He is POWERFUL

5. How would seeing these miracles help Moses to trust God? He could better understand how powerful God is

6. How might they help other people to believe that God really did speak to Moses if Moses showed them God's miracles too? They would be amazed and know that only God could help Moses do the miracles

7. What else was Moses worried about? That he wouldn't know what to say

8. What promises did God make to Moses? I will be with you and give you the words to say

9. Can we trust God to help us too? Yes

10. How do we know we can trust God?  He is powerful, He has promised to be with us in the Bible, He has shown that He can be trusted over and over again in the Bible, in our lives and in the lives of those we know (just like we knew we could trust our friends based on seeing them be trustworthy before)

11. What could you do if you are scared, nervous or having trouble trusting God? Pray - tell God how you feel and ask Him to help you, read the Bible to see how God has shown Himself to be trustworthy, talk to other Christians - ask them for stories of how God has helped them

Craft Idea: Accordion Snake!

original (5).jpg

Before the lesson:

- Download and print the lesson reminder circle on coloured paper, cut out, punch a hole through the top and tie a length of string to it

- Gather coloured paper, googley eyes, scissors, pens and glue

- Cut a series of coloured paper strips, round shapes for the head and tongue shapes from red paper

Have the kids:

- Fold twisty accordion shapes by holding the ends of two strips of paper together, perpendicular to each other, then alternately folding one strip over another until the accordion is formed. Eager kids can make several accordions and glue them together to make a long snake!

- Glue a snake face on the front, googley eyes and a tongue

- Punch a hole in the back of the tail and tie in the lesson reminder
