Week 9: Obeying God - Fruits of the Spirit

 

Lesson Objective:

God helps us to build Godly character traits as we follow Him - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.

 

Bible Passage:

Galatians 5:22-26

 

Memory Verse:

Galatians 5:22-23- God’s spirit makes us loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self-controlled. There is no law against behaving in any of these ways.

Story Idea: Mystery Bags & Read It!

 

Before the lesson:

- Put three different fruits in three different pillowcases or mystery bags (eg. apple, banana, star fruit)

 

Object Lesson:

- Have three volunteers each put their hand into one of the pillow cases and see if they can guess the item inside

- See if the kids can guess what today's story is about based on what was in the cases

 

Have the kids read Galatians 5:22-26

Quiz Questions:

 

* Use a piece of fruit and when the hands go up to answer questions - pass the fruit to a kid - whoever has the fruit can give an answer!

 

1. What are some of the 'fruits' that the Bible names? Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self control

2. Give an example of what it means to be:

*loving

* joyful

* patient

*kind

* faithful

*self controlled

3. Who is it that helps us to show these fruits in our lives? God and His spirit

4. What could we do if we are having trouble being loving and patient and kind and self controlled? Ask God to help us and change us

Game Idea: Fruit Salad Race!

 

 

- Download and print the fruit of the spirit game sheets and stick them around the room

- Play music and have the kids mull around

- When you stop the music call out either a fruit name from one of the pictures or one of the fruits of the spirit

- Everyone must run to touch that fruit - the last there is out!

- The last player remaining wins!

Activity Idea: Fruit of the Spirit Find A Word

- Download and print the fruit of the spirit find a word

- Have the kids search to find all of the words in the grid!

Craft Idea: Fruit Ball

Before the lesson:

- Cut strips of coloured paper and leaf shapes out of green paper

- Gather pens, hole punches, split pins and pipe cleaners

 

Have the kids:

- Write each of the nine fruits of the spirit on a strip of paper and 'Fruits of the Spirit' on a leaf

- Decorate their strips of paper

- Punch holes in both ends of each strip and in the leaf

- Attach the fruit together with split pins and pipe cleaner as shown

 

 

Remind the kids that God helps us grow and show the fruit of the spirit!
