Year 1, Term 1, Week 6: Ideas for Middle Group
Week 6: Jesus is here... He shows us His power!
Lesson Objective:
Jesus shows us that he is from God, and that he has power, and power over death.
Bible Passage:
Luke 7:11-17
Memory Verse:
Luke 7:16- Everyone was frightened and praised God. They said “A great prophet is here with us! God has come to his people!”
Story Idea: Charades and Watch It!
- Depending on the size of the group, split the group into teams or play as one big team
- Have someone from each team volounteer to be given a word relating to the story (eg. woman, Jesus, dead, alive, crying, happy, rocket etc.)
- The kid who's up should act without speaking so that the team can guess the word
- Ask the kids to list some really powerful things they can think of (eg. strong people, big trucks, rocket ships etc.)
- Ask the kids why a rocket is so powerful (it flies way out into space)

Have the kids watch the following youtube video:

Quiz Questions:
1. Why was the widow sad? Her son had died
2. What did Jesus say to her first? Don't cry?
3. Why might this be a strange thing for Jesus to say to her? Her son had just died - of course she would be upset!
4. What did Jesus do? Raised her son to life
5. Is this a miracle? Yes
7. What do you think this teaches us about Jesus? He is powerful and he cares for people
8. Does Jesus have more power than a bowling ball or a rocket-ship? Yes
9. Does Jesus have power over death? Yes
10. Does He care for us too? Yes
Game Idea: Ten Pin Bowling!
- Before the lesson, gather pins (10 per group), plastic bottles work well, and a ball
- Set the pins up in the classic triangle at the end of the room and have the kids stand at the other end, but don't show the kids the ball
- Ask the kids to try and knock the pins over while staying standing at one side of the room (it seems impossible!)
- Then show the ball to the kids and have them take turns bowling it to knock over the pins
- Kids who are not currently bowling can help with resetting the pins or scoring
- The kid with the highest score wins!
Explain:
- It seems impossible to knock the pins over from one side of the room, but with the power of a ball - it's simple!
- Many things seem impossible to us, but God is more powerful than we can imagine and anything is possible for Him!
- God is powerful and He cares for us!

Activity Idea: Retell the story with Puppets
- Use the box of puppets from the cupboard and assign different characters from the story to different kids
- Have them move around with their puppets to act out the story - prompting them when when they are unsure of what happened next
Craft Idea: Jesus is more powerful than a rocket ship!

Before the lesson:
- Cut A4 sheets of coloured paper in half across the width (these will roll to make the body)
- Download and print the point template, cut out the circle and along the line, then pull it together and staple to make a cone shape
- Download and print the message heart template, then cut around the shape, and stick a length of string to the back of the heart
- Cut triangles of red orange and yellow cellophane and tissue paper to make flames
- Gather pencils or crayons, glue, sticky tape, staplers and various colours of tissue paper, sequins, mosaic bits and pieces and anything else the kids might use to decorate
Have the kids:
- Decorate their half sheet of paper (collage glue tissue paper and decoration items on or colour in)
- Glue triangles to the back of the bottom or top of their sheet
Prayer Idea: Dice Prayer
- Download and print the dice prayer guide
- Have the kids take turns rolling the giant dice and praying according to the number they roll
