Year 1, Term 1, Week 3: Ideas for Senior Group

Week 3: The Good News... From Micah!

Lesson Objective:

Because of sin, people were separate from God and living difficult lives. God sent prophet’s like Micah to tell them that God would send a ruler/king to save them.

Bible Passage:

Micah 4:9-11 – Micah 5:1-4

Memory Verse:

Micah 5:4- Like a shepherd taking care of his sheep, this ruler will lead and care for his people by the power and glorious name of the Lord his God.

Story Telling: Word Snail & Read It!

Ask the kids if they remember anything from last week’s lesson, prompt them to recall:

- Life was good in the Garden

- Eve and Adam ate the fruit and were sent out of the garden away from God

- Life would be difficult from then on

Play a game of word snail:

original (12).jpg

- Have the kids guess words relating to the story (eg. message, Jesus, Prophet, Bethlehem, help etc.)

- Draw a series of dashes on the board corresponding to the letters in the word

- Have kids guess letters - if the letter is in the word, write it in above the appropriate dash. If not, draw the next part of the word snail!

- The kids win if they can guess the word before the snail is complete, but they lose if they are too slow and the snail is drawn first!

Have the kids read Micah 4:9-11 and Micah 5:1-4 and Micah 7:7-9

Quiz Questions:

1. How were the people of Jerusalem feeling? Sad/scared

2. Why were they surrounded by nations who wanted to hurt them? Because of their sin

3. Do you think our sin gets us into trouble sometimes too? Yes

4. Why is that? Usually disobeying God has consequences - God's plan is best, so when we're not following it, we end up in trouble

5. Does our sin affect our relationship with God? Why? Yes, it shows that we have turned away from or against God

6. Micah tells the people that God is going to send a ruler, a king, which town would this ruler come from? Bethlehem

7. What would the ruler do? Lead and care for his people and bring peace

8. What does peace mean? Calmness, freedom from fighting or war

9. Who is the ruler that Micah is talking about - the one who would be born in Bethlehem? Jesus

10. Micah says in chapter 7 that he trusts God to save him, save him from what? Sin

11. Jesus came to fix the mess we have made, to pay for our sins - how does that bring us peace with God? It fixes our relationship with God - we are no longer against Him because of our sin. we can love and follow Him instead

Game Idea: Oops Freeze!

- Split the kids into teams and set up a circle for the kids to walk around using markers

- Give each child a flat sports bean bag (from cupboard) - different colours for different teams

- The kids should all walk around the markers in a clock-wise direction, balancing their bean bag on their head

- If a bean bag falls off, that child must freeze and wait for another team member to come along and carefully bend down, pick up their bean bag and put it back on their head again, so that they can keep walking

- A team wins when the other team has all members frozen!

NB: depending on the balancing skills of kids in your group - you may choose to make it easier (allow kids to hold their own bean bag on their head while helping a team mate) or harder (make walking more challenging eg. walk with hands behind back, on tip toes, while clapping etc.)

Remind the kids that God's people were stuck because they had done the wrong thing, but Micah had a good news message for them - God was sending Jesus to help them!

Game Idea: Stuck in the Mud

- Choose one or two (depending on the size of the group) volounteers to be 'up'

- The kids should all spread out in the play space and run around

- Those who are 'up' try to tag the rest of the kids

- When a kid is tagged, they are 'stuck in the mud' and must stand with their legs spread out wide, and must stand there until another kid can crawl under their legs (or you could make the rule to touch their shoe with your hand if some of the girls are wearing skirts/dresses)

- Those who are 'up' are trying to make everyone stuck, and the rest of the class is trying to avoid being stuck

- Change those who are up regularly enough to keep it interesting

Whole Group Craft Idea: Megaphone with Speech Bubble

original (13).jpg

- Before the lesson, gather a large coloured sheet and a large white sheet of cardboard, tape, glue and things to decorate with (felt pens or paint, shape cut-outs and cotton wool balls)

- Follow these instructions to trace and cut out a megaphone from the coloured card

- Draw and cut out a large speech bubble shape from the white card

- Download and print the Micah's Message Letters on white paper or card

- Have the kids work together to cut out and decorate the letters and stick them in order to the megaphone ('Micah had a message') and to the speech bubble 'God would send a a King, God would save His people')

- They can glue white cotton balls around the edge of the speech bubble to decorate it (like a cloud outline)

- The display can hang on the wall or from the roof as a reminder of Micah's message
